Four years ago, a cancer formally took over our body politic. We then began several exhausting years of uncertain chemotherapy. Tuesday marked a relieving end to the first part of the battle. Yet, it’s too early to celebrate being cancer-free as all originating conditions remain in our political system.

To provide a guide for needed repairs, this issue takes inspiration from famed muckraker Lincoln Steffens’ “Shame of the Cities” series a century ago. The goal is to help restore the health of and confidence in our democracy.
